Minor errors led to a significant misstep for the Minnesota Vikings, who saw their five-game unbeaten streak come to an end with a 31-29 loss to the Detroit Lions on October 20.
As the game neared its conclusion, the Vikings spiked the ball at midfield, seemingly setting up rookie kicker Will Reichard for a 68-yard attempt that head coach Kevin O’Connell felt confident about.
However, with only six players on the line of scrimmage, the Vikings incurred a five-yard penalty that pushed them out of Reichard’s range. Following that, the Lions sacked quarterback Sam Darnold during a Hail Mary attempt, but the crucial penalty had already dashed their hopes of winning.
This marked the Vikings’ eighth penalty of the game, seven of which were against the offense. While it wasn’t the sole factor in their loss, it highlighted the numerous errors made by Minnesota’s offense. They committed three holding penalties (with a fourth offset by a defensive penalty), two illegal formation penalties, a false start, and an offsides call.
O’Connell addressed the offense’s self-inflicted mistakes, accepting full responsibility for the errors that contributed to the team’s first defeat of the season.
“That’s my job,” O’Connell stated. “To fix those self-inflicted wounds… When you’re trying to win at the level we’re aiming for against any opponent, we can’t afford to help good teams. We need all 11 guys executing the play, both before and after the snap, with great attention to detail across all three phases. I’ll keep pushing this team every single day.”
#Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell says he was going to send out Will Reichard for a game-winning try until Christian Darrisaw’s penalty. The FG would’ve been from about 68 yards. 73 was a just a bit too far outside his range. @FOX9 pic.twitter.com/2R13M3FDCu
