ARIZONA — The Arizona Cardinals may be active at the NFL trade deadline in two weeks, depending on the organization’s chosen direction.
With a record of 3-4, the Cardinals could convince themselves that the season is still within reach, even if making the playoffs appears challenging.
Ultimately, it’s a decision for Cardinals general manager Monti Ossenfort. If they decide to pursue trades, ESPN has identified an ideal target: Cleveland Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II.
According to Ben Solak, acquiring Newsome might be a tough sell, but Arizona should be at the forefront if he becomes available.
“I’m not sure the Browns would actually let him go, but the Cardinals should be first on the phone if they do. Newsome has versatility to play inside and outside, excelling in both zone and man coverage. He would immediately fill the much-needed CB1 role in Arizona, while other young players compete for the remaining spots,” he noted.
Newsome would significantly improve Arizona’s cornerback situation and create a strong pairing with current slot corner Garrett Williams.
At just 24 years old and a former first-round pick, Newsome has already made an impression in Cleveland. His athleticism and height would make him a starter in Arizona right away.
As for what a trade package might entail, that’s still uncertain. ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler indicated he doesn’t expect the Cardinals to be buyers at the deadline:
“The Cardinals are trying to win in 2024 while also planning for the future. This balance requires patience, which is why I anticipate GM Monti Ossenfort will hold onto his picks. Safety Budda Baker could generate trade interest if Ossenfort decides to give the impending free agent a chance to earn a new contract elsewhere,” Fowler stated.
We’ll soon see which direction Arizona ultimately decides to take.
