The Washington Commanders were anticipated to strengthen their cornerback position before the NFL trade deadline, with veteran Jonathan Jones of the New England Patriots being one of the most discussed potential acquisitions.
However, Washington has decided not to pursue a trade for Jones.
Instead, on Tuesday, the Commanders traded for veteran cornerback Marshon Lattimore from the New Orleans Saints, a move first reported by NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. The Saints received a third-round pick in exchange for Lattimore, just three hours before the league’s 4 p.m. ET deadline.
Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo mentioned that the team planned to retain “culture guys” like Jones in Foxboro, but there was significant speculation surrounding the 31-year-old, who is on an expiring contract.
It’s clear why Washington opted for Lattimore, who is three years younger at 28, has a stronger coverage rating, and boasts a track record that includes four Pro Bowl selections during his eight seasons in New Orleans.
