Yankees make a tough decision for Aaron Boone as offseason work begins

The New York Yankees announced Friday that Aaron Boone will return as manager for his eighth season after the team exercised his option for 2025. Boone has compiled a 603-429 record during his time in New York, a tenure often scrutinized by fans as he has yet to capture a World Series title. However, he led the Yankees to the AL pennant this season, falling three wins short of their 28th championship.

“I am grateful for the trust placed in me to lead this team,” Boone said in a statement. “This is a responsibility—and an opportunity—that I will never take lightly. It’s a privilege to work with such dedicated and talented players, coaches, and staff members. I’m already looking forward to spring training in Tampa and working tirelessly to bring the Yankees back to the postseason to contend for a World Championship.”

Boone’s return was hardly in question, particularly as he led the Yankees to a deep postseason run, marking his sixth playoff appearance in seven seasons. New York ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series in five games. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expressed his support for Boone earlier this week at the GM meetings, calling himself a “big Aaron Boone fan,” making the manager’s return feel inevitable.

Looking ahead, Boone may face questions about his long-term future with the team, as he manages 2025 without a contract extension while the Yankees strive for their first title since 2009.

“Aaron provides a steadying influence in our clubhouse and has a unique talent for connecting with and building relationships with players,” Cashman said. “He consistently shows these strengths in the challenging environment of New York, making him one of the game’s top managers. Our work is not finished, but as we chase our ultimate goal in 2025, I’m thrilled to have Aaron leading our team.”
