Miranda Lambert led a star-studded tribute to country legend George Strait at the 2024 CMA Awards on Wednesday, bringing together a powerful group of artists to honor the 72-year-old icon. Among those joining her were Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson, Jamey Johnson, and Parker McCollum, who all paid tribute to Strait as he received the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award.
Wilson began the tribute with a soulful version of “Amarillo by Morning,” followed by Johnson’s raw performance of “Give It Away.” Lambert and McCollum then took the stage for an emotional rendition of “Troubadour,” with Johnson harmonizing.
Throughout the performances, a montage of iconic photos from Strait’s illustrious career, including a memorable image with Willie Nelson, was displayed.
After the tribute, Strait addressed the crowd, offering emotional thanks to his fans, friends, and family, especially his wife of 53 years, Norma Strait. “I want to thank the CMAs for adding my name to the incredible list of artists who have received the Willie Nelson award,” he said. “It’s amazing to hear these great artists perform my songs, and I want to especially thank Norma for her unwavering support for almost 53 years.”
Known as the “King of Country,” Strait’s career spans more than four decades, with 60 number-one hits, the most by any artist across all genres. He debuted in 1981 with Strait Country and quickly became renowned for his traditional country sound and unique voice. Strait has won 22 Academy of Country Music Awards and 20 Country Music Association Awards, including two Entertainer of the Year honors in 1989 and 1990.
