Luke Walsh, a former halfback for the Penrith Panthers and Newcastle Knights, has agreed to a new contract that will enable him to play rugby league going forward.

Walsh, who was forced to retire from the Super League in 2018 after receiving several medical opinions, has agreed to join the Macquarie Scorpions for the 2025 season, joining his fourth Newcastle Rugby League team since then.

Prior to periods abroad in the Super League with St Helens RLFC (2014–16) and the Catalans Dragons (2017–18), Walsh, who turns 38 in May, played in 41 games for the Knights (2007–09) and 107 games for the Panthers (2009–13) throughout seven seasons in the NRL competition.

Walsh, who took over from Andrew Johns when he made his debut, will be joining from Western Suburbs, where he regrettably had a season marred by injuries in 2024.

According to Scorpions coach Jye Bayley, “We needed the experience,” as reported by The Newcastle Herald.

He is an excellent player with NRL and Super League experience, and we have many younger players.

He will benefit us both on and off the field. He is the person we were searching for.
