- “SAD NEWS:Bob Uecker, affectionately known as “Mr. Baseball,”……… passed away on Thursday at the age of 90 after a private battle with small-cell lung cancer. A Milwaukee native, Uecker’s association with the Brewers spanned over five decades, during which he became a cherished figure in the baseball community.
Uecker’s journey in Major League Baseball began as a catcher, debuting with the Milwaukee Braves in 1962. He also played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, and Atlanta Braves. Despite a modest playing career, Uecker transitioned seamlessly into broadcasting, joining the Brewers’ radio team in 1971. His distinctive voice and quick wit endeared him to fans, making him synonymous with Brewers baseball.
Beyond the broadcast booth, Uecker’s charisma led to numerous television appearances, including over 100 guest spots on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson,” where he earned the moniker “Mr. Baseball.” He also starred in the sitcom “Mr. Belvedere” and portrayed the memorable announcer Harry Doyle in the “Major League” film series.
Uecker’s contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame as the 2003 recipient of the Ford C. Frick Award. Despite his ventures into acting and comedy, his dedication to baseball and the Milwaukee community remained unwavering.
He is survived by his son, Bob Jr., and daughter, Sue Ann. The Brewers organization and fans alike mourn the loss of a legend whose humor and passion left an indelible mark on the game.
