Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick has suffered a profound personal loss due to the recent devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. The Palisades Fire, which began in early January 2025, ravaged Redick’s rental home in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, reducing it to ashes. Redick, his wife Chelsea, and their two sons, Knox and Kai, had safely evacuated prior to the destruction.
Upon returning to the site, Redick was overwhelmed by the complete devastation. He expressed deep sorrow over the loss of irreplaceable personal belongings and cherished memories accumulated over nearly two decades. “I was not prepared for what I saw,” Redick stated. “It’s complete devastation and destruction… Everything we own, that was of any importance to us… was in that house.”
The Palisades community, known for its close-knit environment, has been significantly impacted, with many residents losing their homes. Redick emphasized the importance of community support during this challenging time and expressed his commitment to aiding in the rebuilding efforts. “The Palisades community has really just been so good to us… We’re gonna rebuild, and we want to help lead on that,” he affirmed.
In a heartwarming gesture, San Antonio Spurs players Chris Paul and Victor Wembanyama presented Redick’s sons with signed jerseys to help them start a new collection after losing their previous memorabilia in the fire. Redick expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “I appreciate all the love. And not surprised Chris did something like that.”
Despite the personal tragedy, Redick remains dedicated to his role with the Lakers. He expressed his desire to continue coaching and supporting his team, stating, “I want to play tomorrow. I want to coach tomorrow. I want these guys to play tomorrow. And if we can play, we’ll play.”
The Los Angeles wildfires have caused widespread devastation, resulting in multiple fatalities and the destruction of thousands of structures. The Lakers organization, along with the broader community, continues to rally together to support those affected during this challenging time.
