Kirby Smart and his coaching team recently made a surprising recruiting choice, one that raises questions about their strategy. Earlier this week, Smart extended an offer to Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, a quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class. This decision stands out since Georgia already has a four-star QB commitment from Ryan Montgomery, a top 100 player according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
Despite Montgomery’s presence, Georgia chose to offer Sagapolutele. Initially, it was unclear how strong the staff’s interest in him really was, as an offer doesn’t always signify a pursuit of a commitment. However, according to an On3 report on Wednesday, Sagapolutele is now “heavily considering” Georgia following this recent offer.

There are a few points to consider here. First, while Sagapolutele has shown interest in Georgia, this doesn’t necessarily mean that Kirby Smart and his staff would accept his commitment right now. The timing of Smart’s offer suggests they have at least some interest, but it’s hard to confirm their intentions at this point.
Additionally, Sagapolutele has been committed to Cal since July, giving him a well-established relationship with their program, while his connection with Georgia is just beginning.
Finally, Georgia needs to handle this carefully with their current 2025 QB commit, Ryan Montgomery. Having two quarterbacks in the same recruiting class is rare, and if Georgia aggressively pursues Sagapolutele, it could risk Montgomery’s commitment. So far, Montgomery hasn’t publicly shown any concern or sign of reconsidering, but that possibility can’t be ruled out.
In any case, there must be some level of mutual interest between Georgia and Sagapolutele for this late offer to be extended and for Sagapolutele to already be weighing his options with the Bulldogs.
