Bears key man trade deadline in blockbuster

With the NFL trade deadline just hours away, the Chicago Bears have remained quiet as both buyers and sellers as the November 5 deadline looms.

Around this time last season, the Bears made a major move by trading for defensive end Montez Sweat from the Washington Commanders. His addition filled a key gap in their defense, making an immediate impact that has carried into this season. However, despite low playoff prospects, Chicago didn’t act as major sellers at last year’s deadline.

Now, sitting at 4-4 with the deadline approaching, it’s uncertain whether the Bears will pursue players or offload some talent. They have clear needs on the offensive line and are looking to bring in an interior lineman, yet there are also players on the roster without a defined role who could be traded.

With that context, here are four players who might be moved ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

1. RB Khalil Herbert

Of all the trade options on the table, Khalil Herbert seems the most likely candidate to be moved, as several teams are in search of a reliable running back. Now in the final year of his rookie contract, Herbert has been inactive for the past two games, with the Bears leaning on a combination of D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson for short-yardage situations. Despite being an effective rusher for Chicago over the past four years, Herbert no longer seems to fit in this offense. The Bears could potentially trade him to a team in need, especially since they’re unlikely to re-sign him in the offseason. However, with one injury, they might need to rely on him again.

2. OG Nate Davis

It seems the Bears have moved on from Nate Davis, who signed a three-year deal in the 2023 offseason but has proven to be one of GM Ryan Poles’ most disappointing signings. Davis was a healthy scratch for two straight games and was only active in Week 9 because of injuries along the offensive line—though he still didn’t play. This suggests he’s fallen out of favor, and with guard/center Ryan Bates expected to return soon, Davis’s role has diminished even further. He could potentially offer depth for a team needing an interior lineman, and if Poles can secure a late-round pick for him—likely preventing an outright release—it would be a big win.

3. DE Dominique Robinson

Former sixth-round pick Dominique Robinson has gone from being a healthy scratch for eight games to stepping in as a starter due to Montez Sweat’s injury. Despite this opportunity, Robinson remains firmly on the trade block, as reported by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on October 23. Up until Sunday, Robinson has contributed little to Chicago’s pass rush, and with depth behind Sweat in players like DeMarcus Walker, Darrell Taylor, rookie Austin Booker, and the recently activated Jacob Martin, Robinson’s role appears limited. He was somewhat unexpected on the 53-man roster this offseason and is unlikely to make the team next year. If the Bears can secure even a late-round pick for him, it would make sense to trade him.

4. WR Keenan Allen

This is the least likely trade scenario, considering the Bears invested a fourth-round pick to acquire Allen this offseason to support rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. While Allen has had a stellar career, his contributions to Chicago’s offense this season have been minimal, aside from a standout two-touchdown game against the Jaguars. His performance against the Cardinals was shaky, with several drops that made him an unreliable option for Williams. With DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, and tight end Cole Kmet already on the roster, losing Allen wouldn’t be a significant blow if Chicago receives a strong offer. Still, this trade seems unlikely—but if the price is right, it’s not entirely off the table.
