Alabama quarterback has had a mixed season so far. The preseason All-American started strong, leading Alabama to victories in their first four games, including a big win over the now-No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs. In that Georgia matchup, Milroe excelled, completing 27 of 33 passes for 374 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing 16 times for 117 yards and two more touchdowns. At this point, he was a top Heisman Trophy candidate with +175 odds, ahead of Miami quarterback Cam Ward at +500.
Since then, however, Milroe has dropped out of Heisman contention as Alabama has gone 2-2, with losses to Vanderbilt and Tennessee. In this period, he has thrown five interceptions and hasn’t matched his performance from the Georgia game. On “The McShay Show,” former NFL draft analyst Todd McShay compared the 2025 quarterback class—featuring players like Milroe, Ward, Shedeur Sanders, Quinn Ewers, Garrett Nussmeier, and Carson Beck—to the 2023 class.
McShay noted that Milroe reminds him of Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, pointing out both quarterbacks’ athleticism and strong arms. “Richardson was drafted way too high. Maybe that’s where Milroe will end up,” McShay said. “You’re betting on the athleticism and the big arm.” While McShay acknowledged their talents, he also emphasized that both players need more development and experience. “Milroe has big-game experience in the SEC with Alabama, more than Richardson had with 12-13 starts at Florida, but he still needs more reps.”
Richardson, a former Florida Gator, was the No. 4 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft but has recently been benched by the Colts in favor of veteran Joe Flacco. Head coach Shane Steichen remains hopeful for Richardson’s development.
Milroe, a four-star recruit from the 2021 class, has thrown for 1,937 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions this season, while also rushing for 380 yards and 12 touchdowns. The No. 11 Alabama Crimson Tide will play the No. 15 LSU Tigers on Saturday at Death Valley, with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
