The San Diego Padres announced on Wednesday that manager Mike Shildt has agreed to a two-year contract extension, securing his position with the team through the 2027 season. Shildt, initially hired in November 2023 on a two-year contract, led the Padres to a 93-69 record this season, placing second in the NL West, five games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres advanced past the Atlanta Braves in the Wild Card Series with a 2-0 win but were eliminated in the Division Series by the Dodgers after holding a 2-1 lead.
General manager A.J. Preller praised Shildt’s impact, saying, “It was an outstanding season for the team and a great year for Mike as a manager. It was clear he’s the person I want to work alongside long-term, and this extension reflects a job well done.”
Shildt expressed his appreciation for the trust placed in him by the organization, saying, “I feel incredibly blessed and grateful for the confidence from ownership and A.J., who have supported me in the organization for almost four years. Managing the team last season and now receiving this extension is truly an honor.”
Shildt also emphasized the importance of partnership with Preller, stating, “My respect for A.J. continues to grow as I see the dedication he puts into building both the major league team and the broader organization.”
Before joining the Padres, Shildt managed the St. Louis Cardinals from 2019 to 2021, guiding them to the playoffs each season.
